The island of Jako is a trip well worth the effort – this deserted island paradise is a marine enthusiasts dream: sparkling gin clear water, pure white sand and an abundance of pristine coral reefs. The channel between the main land and the island of Jako is home to pods of dolphins and many other passing visitors such as whales, mimic orcas and whale sharks as well as the many pelagic and reef fish that gather here around the turn of the tides.

For those interested in the cultural past of Timor Leste, Lautem district has a whole host of interesting features. There are also stone sarcophagi and many animist shrines to be found in the area. The area is also a haven for many of the island’s 25 protected species of birds including eagles, ospreys and the barn owl.
