Ainaro boasts the highest summit of all the districts, Mount Ramelau, which towers over the spine of peaks which stretch east and west across the island at a height of 2,963 meters. The statue of the Virgin Mary gazes down on the view, which can sweep from coast to coast. Many visitors set out to watch the sunrise from the summit, setting out from Maubisse or Hatobuilico in the middle of the night as the ascent itself takes some three hours of uphill walking.
